May is the month when tennis fans really
get into the action as the French Open, also known as the Roland Garros
tournament kicks off what will become a consecutive series of major
tennis events with Wimbledon and the US Open following shortly after in
June and August respectively. There are only four Grand Slam tournaments
each year and it is in these tournaments where stars are born and
legends are made.
In the Men’s Division last year, Rafael
Nadal and Novak Djokovic battled in an epic final match that saw the
former defeating the latter, 6-4, 6-3, 2-6, 7-5. With Nadal continuing
to improve his fitness level, we can expect him to make a gallant stand
as he tries to defend his title and be hailed as the “King of Clay” for
the eighth time in his career.
Serena Williams had a forgettable
experience at the French Open last year after she suffered a monumental
upset by getting booted out in the first round of the tournament by
Virginie Razzano. This is one tournament where Serena has not really
much success, only winning once way back in 2002. But, she had just
recently reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the World Rankings making her an
instant favorite to win it all in every tournament she participates in.
The defending champion in the Women’s Division of the French Open is
erstwhile World No. 1 Maria Sharapova.
