UAAP Season 76

Volleyball season is here again and the top four teams from last season will open this year's UAAP Season 76 women's volleyball tournament Sunday at the Araneta Coliseum.

Four-peat seeking La Salle Lady Spikers will open their campaign aganst last season's third-placers Adamson Lady Falcons, while the Ateneo Lady Eagles forge on a duel against the National University Lady Bulldogs.

Game time is at 4 pm, right after the duel between Ateneo and NU at 2 pm. BALLS Channel will air same-day replays of the UAAP Season 76 women's volleyball opening matches starting at 9 pm.

UAAP Season 76

A new chapter in the ever-growing Philippine football history unfolds this Saturday when the UAAP men’s football tournament opens.

De La Salle University and University of Santo Tomas fire up the hostilities when they kick-off at 10 am. While runner-up University of the Philippines face the University of the East at 1 pm. Finishing off the opening day triple-header will be last year’s bronze medal-winning Far Eastern University tackling the National University at 3 pm.

FIVB Women's Club World Championship

The best six women’s volleyball clubs in the world fight for this year’s FIVB Women’s Club World Championship in Zurich, Switzerland.

It’s an open race this year as last year’s champs, the Brazilian side of Sollys Nestle Osasco, failed to qualify this year, giving chances to their compatriots Unilever Volei, Turkish club Vakifbank Istanbul, and rising giant Guangdong Evergrande of China, as the favorites for this year’s tourney. Also, hosts Switzerland will put all of their money to their very own Volero Zurich in hopes of pulling off a stunner in this year’s competitions.

The 2013 ATP Masters Series comes to its final pit stop as it invades the hard courts of Paris.

Reclaiming the world number-one last October, Rafael Nadal looks for one last title as the tennis season nears its end. Winning in Indian Wells, Madrid, Rome, Montreal, and Cincinnati, the Spaniard eyes his sixth win in the Masters Series this year.

But he will faces stiff competition in deposed world number-one Novak Djokovic, Roger Federer, Juan Martin del Potro, and last year’s Paris Invitational titlist and compatriot David Ferrer breathing down Nadal’s neck.

MP & Silva, an international media rights company, secured a deal with the Premier League to distribute the media rights of English football’s top-tier Premier League for the next three seasons in the Philippines.

MP & Silva sold the rights to new broadcaster, beIN SPORT HD. They were unable to be ready for the start of this season. This gave the BALLS channel an opportunity to show live Barclays Premier League matches. Up to the end of October, BALLS would have shown 23 matches over 9 match weekends.

beIN SPORT HD is now available on SKYcable HD and will fulfil its exclusive rights from November 1. The last Barclays Premier League match on BALLS with be Chelsea vs. Manchester City on Monday October 28.

The UAAP Season 76 men’s basketball tournament comes to a close today when the University of Santo Tomas Growling Tigers and the De La Salle University Green Archers face-off for Game 3 of their best-of-three finals at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The game tips-off at 3:30 pm. BALLS Channel will air the replay of Game 3 of the UAAP Season 76 men’s basketball Finals starting at 10:30 pm.

Philippine Peace Cup

Defending champions and hosts, Philippines are favorites to retain their title in the upcoming 2013 Philippine Peace Cup. This year’s tournament will be held in Panaad Stadium, Bacolod, Negros Occidental on October 11 to 15, 2013. 

There will be three teams participating this season instead of four. The Azkals are joined by Chinese-Taipei and Pakistan. It will be a single round robin format and the team with the highest points total will be declared the winner.

The “Seve Trophy” is named after Seve Ballesteros, a five time Major winner and the man considered as the most successful golfer from Continental Europe. BALLS will be showing the Manchester United "grand slam" matches against Chelsea and Liverpool over the next fortnight. With BALLS live coverage of the US Open, the matches have been given primetime 9 pm broadcast times:

• Manchester United vs. Chelsea 9 pm Tuesday August 27
• Liverpool vs. Manchester United 9 pm Monday September 2

US Open

The fourth and final grand slam tennis tournament of the year is set to take place this August as the best in the world troop to the USTA (United States Tennis Association)  Billie Jean King National Tennis Center at the Flushing Meadows-Corona Park in Queens, New York City.

Last year’s final saw a 25 year old Andy Murray win his maiden grand slam title by dethroning previous champion, Novak Djokovic in a dramatic showdown that lasted for 4 hours and 54 minutes. Over in the Women’s Singles tournament, Serena Williams captured her 4th US Open crown.

In order to accommodate the players’ request for a day of rest between the singles semifinals and finals, the 2013 US Open is scheduled to conclude on Monday, September 9. The women’s singles semifinals will be played in a single day session on Friday, September 6, and the women’s final will take place on Sunday, September 8 at 4:30 p.m. ET, in the time slot where the men’s singles final was traditionally played.

The men’s singles semifinals will continue to be played in a single day session on Saturday, September 7, with the men’s singles final to take place on Monday, September 9 at 5:00 p.m. ET. In the new schedule, no competition will be scheduled for the second Saturday night of the tournament.

UAAP Season 76

The University of the East looks to continue its winning ways against Far Eastern University at the UAAP Season 76 men’s basketball tournament at the Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

Game time is at 4 pm, right after the battle between the Ateneo de Manila University and Adamson University at 2 pm. BALLS Channel will air same day replays of the UAAP 76 men's seniors basketball games starting at 8 pm.

European Tour

Our exclusive coverage of the 2013 European Tour also continues on BALLS with the 15th installment of the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles.

Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles

This month, the European Tour once again returns to the place where the sport traces its origins: Scotland. In last year’s event, hometown fans rejoiced as Paul Lawrie hoisted the trophy in front of his countrymen.

Tune in to BALLS Channel as the Johnnie Walker Championship at Gleneagles will be showcased from August 23-26 at 1:00 pm.

UEFA Champions League

The battle of former champions when 1988 European Cup Champions PSV Eindhoven takes on seven-time titlists AC Milan. This will be a tough test for AC Milan and they treat this first competitive match as a quarterfinal. The team with the better aggregate score over two legs will progress to the Group Stage.

Injury-plagued Arsenal was not given an easy path to the Group Stage as Turkish club Fenerbahce stands in their way. They were soundly beaten 1-3 by Aston Villa in their first match in the English Premier League last weekend and are pressured to perform well in this tournament. Fenerbahce are currently appealing a two-year European ban for match-fixing in the Turkish league. The decision will be finalized before the second leg of this contest and can save Arsenal if they end up losing to Fenerbahce on aggregate. If Fenerbahce is disqualified, Arsenal goes through to the next round.

Founded way back in 1881, the Canada Masters is the oldest tournament on the ATP World Tour 1000 series lineup. There is a certain prestige that comes with competing in the tournament that takes place in Montreal, Canada.

Immortalized as champions in the history of the Canada Masters are legendary tennis players such as John McEnroe, Boris Becker and Andre Agassi. And during the past 9 years, the tournament has been won by a member of today’s “Big Four” – Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic or Andy Murray.

Currently, Djokovic holds a two-year win streak in Montreal.

Well, with Humburg now out the window, here’s another tournament that Roger Federer should be able to win.

The Cincinnati Masters is set to open shop once again at the Lindner Family Tennis Center in Mason, Ohio. Federer own the distinction of having the most titles won in the event with five (2005, 2007, 2009, 2010, 2012).

Federer badly needs to win in a prestigious tournament this year and this could be one of his last few opportunities to light up a spark.

ATP World Tour 500 Series

The next pitstop on the schedule of the 2013 ATP World Tour 500 series is Washington D.C.

Roger Federer was the huge favorite to win the German Open Tennis Championships last month. However, that did not occur as Argentina’s Federico Delbonis eliminated the Swiss in the semifinal round en route to the title. As the sport of tennis continues to undergo changes with new names emerging from the depths, this year’s Citi Open in Washington D.C. will make for an intriguing event as another chance to join the list of winners in this year’s ATP World Tour 500 series is up for grabs.

Ukraine’s Alexandr Dolgopolov defeated Germany’s Tommy Haas is last year’s final.

Big names such as Andre Agassi, Michael Chang and Andy Roddick are among those who have reigned supreme at the William H.G. FitzGerald Tennis Center in Rock Creek Park, Washington D.C.

The next pit-stop in this year’s ATP World Tour 500 Series is Hamburg, Germany as the clay courts in Am Rothenbaum hosts the latest German Open Tennis Championships. Juan Monaco of Argentina is the reigning champion after he defeated hometown bet Tommy Hass in last year’s final.
